The Development Officer (DO) will hold primary responsibility for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors/prospects, including individual donors, foundations, and corporations. Through this work, the DO will build sustainable, long-term philanthropic relationships between CFK and its donors while meeting major gift fundraising objectives. The DO works independently and is also part of a three-person fundraising team that includes a Director of Operations & Communications and an Administrative Associate. DEVELOPMENT OFFICER - US OFFICE

Carolina for Kibera (CFK) seeks an experienced, confident, energetic, and highly organized fundraising professional to join our US team. The Development Officer (DO) will hold primary responsibility for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors/prospects, including individual donors, foundations, and corporations. Through this work, the DO will build sustainable, long-term philanthropic relationships between CFK and its donors while meeting major gift fundraising objectives. The DO works independently and is also part of a three-person fundraising team that includes a Director of Operations & Communications and an Administrative Associate. The DO reports to the Director of Operations and Communications. 

CFK’s US office is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. CFK will consider telecommuting options for candidates based in the following areas where we have a significant donor base: Atlanta, Boston, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, DC.  


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifies, cultivates, and personally solicits major gift prospects
  • Writes proposals for major gift individual prospects and foundations
  • Manages a major gift portfolio of approximately 50-75 individual donors and approximately 5-10 foundations
  • Identifies new major gift prospects and develops relationships with new foundation partners
  • Supports the fundraising efforts of high‐level volunteers, including the Board of Directors, in securing new and renewed gifts
  • Ensures that fundraising goals align with program needs and CFK’s long term strategic plan  
  • Works in partnership collaboratively with CFK-Kenya’s fundraising team to effectively manage portfolios and strategic priorities
  • Ensures all donors receive appropriate, prompt acknowledgement and updates on the impacts of their gifts
  • Maintains stewardship records in CFK’s relational database
  • Works with the Director of Operations & Communications to develop an annual fundraising budget and to set annual fundraising goals
  • Participates in the execution of events and programs in support of fundraising activities
  • Tracks progress in reaching fundraising goals and produces monthly, quarterly, and annual fundraising reports  
  • Meets or exceeds annual fundraising goals


QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated and signification experience in a fundraising capacity at a major gifts level
  • Strong commitment to and passion for the mission, vision, and work of CFK
  • Confident, highly motivated, dynamic, and results-driven fundraiser with a high degree of integrity  
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising plan
  • Experience and proven success in writing proposals for major grants
  • Experience in donor relations, public relations, and prospect research
  • Major gifts fundraising experience, including:  
  • Experience and demonstrated success asking for and closing major gifts of $50,000+
  • Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors
  • Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, corporations and foundations
  • Ability and desire to make multiple weekly/monthly face-to-face solicitations  
  • Qualities of a self-starter who enjoys contacting donors and developing donor relationships
  • Sound judgment and confidentiality in handling donor information
  • Ability to excel and work in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, diverse, and high-demand office culture
  • Excellent verbal, written, and intercultural communication skills
  • Knowledge of international community development, gender and ethnicity issues, youth education, public health, and asset building
  • Experience working with relational databases; Salesforce experience preferred
  • Experience with and understanding of international development organizations a plus  
  • International travel experience; experience living or working in East Africa a major plus
  • Must be able to travel both in the US and internationally


EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree required. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Compensation is dependent upon on qualifications and experience. CFK offers a competitive benefit package.
